Hi! This is Chessking47 (or CK47) writing about Mating Patterns. First, Anastasia's Mate.

I hope you enjoyed that cute mate. Now, the mate can be applied more strikingly. Combine decoy and clearance sacrifice.

Easy and simple.

Back Rank Mate next!

Place a queen or rook on the back rank if the monarch can't step forward. Death on the back row!

White to move presents Rd8#

Back rank mates are very common, and so it's always good to create luft, which means space for your king to move.

1) Black king castled kingside

2) Black rook on f8

3) Two white bishops patrolling a1-h8 and one on h7

4) White knight on g5!

Shake all this stuff and that's Blackburne's mate!

Boden's Mate

Is when a king is castled queenside, two friendly pieces block d1 and d2, and two bishops trap the pale king. Naturally, it's a very pleasing pattern usually created by a silly sacrifice.

Boden found out a way to end the game!

Damiano's Mate

Just find mate!

Alternate mate in 5: 1. Qd5+ Rf7 2. gxf7+ Qxf7 3. Rh8+! Kxh8 4. Qxf7 b4 5. Rh1# however, this has nothing to do with our pattern.

Greco's Mate isn't very nice...

Legal's Mate

This is only Part 1. Part 2 is going to be in the article Mating Patterns Part 2.

Good basic mates article, but pls convert the 3rd diagram to a puzzle like the rest of them, demonstrating all the moves in Blackburne's mate. I didn't quite "get it" from just reading your description.

This is good stuff for beginners to learn and everyone else to know. Never underestimate the power of pattern recognition in chess!

Okay, NimzoRoy, thanks for your suggestion, but if you can get The Complete Book of Chess Strategy, there is a puzzle on Blackburne's mate but it's not a legit puzzle. It has a similar position...

This is Blackburne's Mate. I remember the pattern from How to Beat Your Dad at Chess, by Murray Chandler. Smile

Yeah, the first diagram is an easy win... Unless you know how to mate with knight and a bishop. It takes a while to actually learn it. And it's also something that will very rarely be seen.

In Macdonell-Boden, bxc3 is not a mistake, there is nothing else. Just saying.
