I haven't featured a Karpov game in quite a while, so here goes...
On his eleventh move, his opponent (Velimirovic) either decides to sacrifice his queen or commits an oversight. Still, there is work to be done for the full point, and Karpov is at his best, invading Velimirovic's kingside with some well-timed sacrifices. The endgame is also particularly instructive. Enjoy!
Excellent game, very informative!
How do you make an article?
Oversight? Man, this is a known theoretical line.
Could you really call that a queen sacrifice? White did get 2 bishops and 2 pawns for the queen.
This game is annotated by Suetin in his 3 Steps to Mastering Chess Cadogan Book. Thanks for the Game.
57 .. Bxf5 seems like where hope died. Was that forced and how?
this is a drawing variation of KID where white can't win by playing positionally(white queen can't invade the black position) and only way to achieve something is targetting all the white pieces to the black kingside
Very interesting game!
Quite right, Splane. It was popular in the early 1970s, but proved to be unsound. Games like this one were its nemesis.
i think against a lesser opponent one could do that. but not karpov.
IIRC, the queen sacrifice for two minor pieces was invented by David Bronstein.
