    BillWall,

I have read many such articals, but they were just speculative jounalism at the time about ongoing legal oppotunism to help Fischer while still in jail.  Fischer made life hard on jounalists, and I understand the temptation to fill the void of information.  I just find some of these sources you cited tenuous.  Just stick to facts.  A story is expected to have a journalistic opinion, I just do not think a factual list should as well.

    Mischa,

There have been several reports of Fischer having been married twice.  Respected Grandmaster Eugenio Torre of the Philippines claims he has been married twice.

It's also possible that Fischer never married anyone at all.  The Icelandic court is questioning Watai's marriage license.  Watai was not able to produce an original marriage certificate.

In 2004, there were several reports that Fischer had a wife and child from the Philippines (common law marriage).  It may be that he did not marry (or no record),  but had an illigitimate child (Jinky Young).  Time magazine, Aug 23, 2004, referenced the press reports of a first wife and child in the Philippines.

    http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,686101,00.html

"Watai said she was not worried about a report by a Philippine newspaper on Monday quoting a local chess grandmaster (Eugenio Torre) as saying Fischer had a Filipino wife and a child living there."  Source: http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=247509

The exhumed body is to determine if Bobby Fischer is the father of Jinky Young (born May 21, 2001) from his previous wife or girlfriend (live-in partner), Marilyn Young.

The Fischer one is obviously wrong.  I have never read anywhere that he was married twice.  This appears made up for this artical.  The paternity is also open to question.  This does make me wonder how much else is wrong.

Garry Kasparov was married three times and has one child from each marriage.
His first marriage was to Masha in the early 1990's. They had one child, his daughter Polina (b. 1993 or 1994).
His second marriage was to Yulia (Julia), with whom he shares his son, Vadim (b. 1997).
His current wife, with whom he shares a daughter, Aida (b. 2006), is the former Daria (Dasha) Tarasova.

Great list -- and very timely! You can add IM David Vigorito to it, who just got married last weekend. I have no idea whether his wife (Heather Kroll) plays chess.

I'm curious whether any of the people on this list improved significantly after getting married. In my experience, chess is such an individual pursuit that it doesn't mix well with marriage. But maybe it's different if your husband or wife is already a chess enthusiast?

Of course, another reason that people might not improve a lot after marriage is that marriage usually comes later in life, in your 20s and 30s, and by this point most chess players have already gotten close to their peak strength.

On the other side of the argument, I once knew a professor in grad school who encouraged his students to get married. "In one year, you prove great theorem," he said (in his Japanese accent). Are there any chess examples of this phenomenon -- someone getting married and immediately having great results in chess? We could call it the honeymoon effect.

interesting idea, but for something that you've been doing for years it seems like it could do with quite a bit more work.

for example some quick spot checking:

    • Joel Benjamin's wife Debbie is not a "strong master", she is 1600 or so.
    • Many very notable chessplayers are missing - Garry Kasparov for one! - despite the inclusion of much less notable players who are not married to anyone notable.
